Last week I gave you all a recipe on a 4 ingredient cookie! This week I'm giving you a full meal! My healthy take on the classic burger and fries! This meal is easy to make and is great for those who want to satisfy that craving for a burger. Let's get started!
Ingredients:
For the Burger:
- Extra Lean Ground Turkey (1% fat) or Lean Ground Turkey (7% fat) (I buy extra lean ground turkey that is 99% lean because there is less fat as opposed to ground beef)
- A Head of Lettuce (I used red leaf lettuce since it is wider. This will be the "bun" of the burger.)
-Avocado (This is a great source of healthy fats, like Omega 3.)
- Dried Thyme, Basil, Black Pepper (This is for seasoning your turkey burger patties with)
Optional: You can add tomatoes, red onions, reduced fat cheese, pickles or any other vegetable topping you would like. You can also add Olive Oil to coat the pan when cooking on the stove (see Step 3 on the Turkey Burger Recipe)
For the Fries:
- Carrots or Carrot Sticks
(An excellent source for vitamin A) (I bought already cut small carrot sticks, so I wouldn't have to chop them into thin fry slices)
- White Sweet Potato
(An excellent source of fiber, the B vitamins, and much more. Most restaurants use the classic orange sweet potato or yams, but I like the taste of the white sweet potato) (I bought 2 medium sized white sweet potatoes)
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Contains Vitamin E and Vitamin K)
- Dried Oregano and Parsley (This is for seasoning your fries)
Cooking Tip: I would prepare the fries first before starting your burgers, since the fries have to bake in the oven. While the fries bake you can cook your turkey burgers, so everything is finished cooking around the same time!
FRIES RECIPE:
Step 1: Chop up the white sweet potato into long short strips the same size as the carrot sticks to create fries.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit
Step 3: Get a baking tray and place aluminum foil over the baking tray and place carrot sticks and sweet potatoes evenly on the baking tray
Step 4: Drizzle olive oil over the carrots and sweet potatoes evenly.
Step 5: Add the dried oregano and dried parsley to your liking on top of the "fries"
Step 6: Mix the "fries" around to make sure they are coated with seasoning and olive oil. Then, make sure the "fries" are evenly spread across the baking tray.
Step 7: Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until the fries have a nice crisp outside to your liking.
Step 8: Let the fries cool down for about 8-10 minutes and enjoy!

TURKEY BURGER RECIPE:
Step 1: Open up the ground turkey package and season with the dried thyme, basil, and black pepper to your liking.
Step 2: Begin forming patties. I made my turkey patties into a ball first by mixing the seasoning through out. Then, flatten out to form a patty to cook evenly on the stove. I was able to create 4 small patties (which means leftovers for other meals! YESSSS!)
Step 3: Get a pan and add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil or cooking spray so the patties don't stick if you bought the extra lean ground turkey (1% fat). If you bought the lean ground turkey (7% fat) then, you don't have to add any oil to the pan since the fat from the turkey burgers will come out as you cook it providing a non stick to the pan.
Step 4: Add your turkey burgers into the pan and let it cook in the pan on a medium heat over the stove. IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO THOROUGHLY COOK THE BURGER. THE PATTIES MUST BE COOKED COMPLETELY WHITE ON THE INSIDE SINCE IT IS TURKEY. DO NOT CONSUME RAW TURKEY MEAT.
TIP: Be sure to monitor your burgers and flip the patties back and forth to create a nice golden brown on the outside of the patty. The cooking time may take 15-25mins depending on how thick you made the turkey patties. If you are unsure if the patty is fully cooked all the way you can always cut into one patty to make sure it's cooked thoroughly assuming you made the turkey patties all the same size.
Optional: You can also add cheese towards the end of the cooking process if you want a cheeseburger.
Step 5: While the burgers are cooking. Prepare your lettuce by peeling the leaves off and rinsing it. Also cut the avocado into slices and slice any other veggies you would like to use!
Step 6: Once the patties are COMPLETELY cooked, add it onto your lettuce bun and top it off with any veggies or condiments you like. (Mustard is a great low calorie condiment)
Step 7: The turkey burger is complete add your "fries" and ENJOY!
